The donation may be targeted to:

  1. Our flow-through fund for immediate use.
  2. To one of our many Permanent Endowment Funds whose income benefits the community now and in the future including:
    1. The General Permanent Endowment Fund,
    2. The Canadian Unity Council Permanent Endowment Fund,
    3. The Brigadier-General R. Duane Daly Permanent Endowment Fund,
    4. A Personally Named Permanent Endowment Fund.

A Donation By Bequest

A bequest is a donation to the Foundation made in your will.  The bequest may be in the form of a specific amount of money or a gift in kind such as publicly traded shares or real estate. It may specify a certain sum of money, or it may be a portion of your estate.

You may:

  1. choose to add your bequest to one of the existing permanent endowment funds in the Foundation, or
  2. if the value of your bequest is $10,000 or greater, you may specify that your bequest be used to establish a new endowment fund in your name, or
  3. it could be added to an existing permanent endowment fund that you have already established.

Because, by their very nature, bequests are revocable, there is no immediate tax credit. Nevertheless, when your will is probated and the bequest passes to the Foundation, you estate will receive a tax credit for the full value of the bequest. This can significantly reduce the tax that has to be paid on your final income tax return. In addition, any unused portion of the tax credit may be carried back one year.

Be sure to inform the Foundation in writing of your bequest so that you can be appropriately thanked.

A Donation of Life Insurance

A bequest of life insurance to The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation can provide a significant future gift to our community at an affordable present cost to you while allowing you to enjoy present tax benefits. You can do this by:

  1. making the gift through an existing policy, or
  2. creating a new one.
  • You may donate the death benefit of an existing policy simply by naming The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation as the beneficiary.
  • To receive a current tax benefit however, you must also transfer ownership of the policy to the Foundation. This entitles you to a donation receipt for the value of the policy.
  • When you make the Foundation the owner and beneficiary of a policy, you also receive a donation receipt for every subsequent premium payment.

A Donation of Publicly Traded Securities

A gift of publicly traded securities is the transfer of ownership of stocks or bonds to
The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation.

There are significant tax benefits to this type of donation.

  • If you own securities that have increased in value, 50 per cent of the capital gain of those securities are taxable in the year of the sale.
  • However, if you donate those ‘securities in-kind’ to The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation, the entire gain is tax-exempt.

Again, the donation may be targeted to:

  1. Our flow-through fund for immediate community use.
  2. To one of our many Permanent Endowment Funds whose income benefits the community now and in the future including:
    1. The General Permanent Endowment Fund,
    2. The Canadian Unity Council Permanent Endowment Fund,
    3. The R. Duane Daly Permanent Endowment Fund,
    4. A Personally Named Permanent Endowment Fund.

A Donation of Gifts in Kind

A donation of Gifts in Kind such as real estate, artworks, collections etc to The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation should be made after discussions with the Foundation. The value of the donation will be based on a professional appraisal by a qualified appraiser at the time that the donation is to be given.

There are significant tax benefits to this type of donation.

  • If these assets have increased in value during your ownership, 50 per cent of the capital gain of those securities are taxable in the year of the sale.
  • However, if you donate those ‘gifts-in-kind’ to The Encounters With Canada Support Foundation, the entire gain is tax-exempt.

Again, the donation may be targeted to:

  1. Our flow-through fund for immediate community use.
  2. To one of our many Permanent Endowment Funds whose income benefits the community now and in the future including:
    1. The General Permanent Endowment Fund,
    2. The Canadian Unity Council Permanent Endowment Fund,
    3. The R. Duane Daly Permanent Endowment Fund,
    4. A Personally Named Permanent Endowment Fund.

A Donation by Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust is established when you irrevocably transfer assets such as cash, publicly traded securities, or real estate to a trustee, which is normally a trust company, for the eventual purpose of that property being transferred to the Foundation.

You retain the right to receive any income from those assets for the rest of your life or for a period of time that you have specified.

At the end of our life or of that specified period of time, the capital remaining is paid to the Foundation.

When you establish the trust, you receive a charitable receipt for the value of the remainder interest in the trust.

A Donation by Way of a Gift of a Residual Interest

You may want to donate an asset to the Foundation but retain the use of it until your passing.  For example, you may want to donate your property to the Foundation but you want to occupy it for your lifetime.  One’s residence is a good example.  You may want to donate some artwork or a special collection to the Foundation but you want to enjoy them during your lifetime.  This desire can be arranged.

You will receive a tax receipt for the donation based on the present value of the future or residual interest that you have given to the Foundation.
